The Light flickering through different colours of Murano glass makes me smile. The Venetians are on top of their game ever since the 8th century. In order to protect the city from the dangers of the glass furnaces the Venetian Doge ordered all glassblowers to the tiny island of Murano in 1291. A lot of the current producers have been around for centuries like Barovier others were founded by outsiders at the beginning of the last century like Venini who commissioned chandeliers, bowls and vases by architects Carlo Scarpa and Gio Ponti. All these different stories make up an epic tale of craftsmanship and the splendor of Venice. Since they’re of no use to a lot of people, I look for my vintage bowls on Ebay. For a small amount you can lay your hands on a pristine Mid-century crystal bowl with threads of real gold, called aventurine glass.
